“Number, Ms. Demore.”
“Eighty.”
“You’re jogging through a park early one morning, when you hear what sounds like a woman in trouble. As you get closer you can see a woman struggling against a man in the bushes beside the path.” Deanne leaned her head back against the couch. There was no doubt where this was headed. “Do you: Keep running to the nearest phone at the edge of the park? Get close enough to get a description of the man, then continue to the phone? Or pick up a tree branch lying nearby and try to stop the attack?”
“I had a feeling I’d get one of these,” Deanne sighed. “No doubt, there will be disagreement with my answer.” She felt Sage’s position shift against her shoulder. “I know common sense speaks loudly to going on to a phone, which would leave me hoping that the police would get there quickly. That same common sense would tell me, though, that rape or even murder would happen before help got there. Getting close enough for a description may or may not distract him, but I know I couldn’t leave her.”
“You’d attack?” asked a surprised Ali.
“I’d be yelling for help the whole time, but, yes, I’d try to stop it.”
“I don’t know if I can say what I’d do until I was faced with the real thing,” Connie remarked.
Sage moved suddenly forward, placing her hand over Deanne’s knee. She looked back at her as she rose. In her eyes was a seriousness that seemed to transcend that of the conversation. It was a look that instilled immediate concern. Concern for Sage Bristo; now, there was a contradiction in thought Deanne had never expected.
Sage disappeared up the stairs, and the conversation continued. Weapon or no weapon, you wouldn’t have known. Personal safety must be considered above all else. The discussion carried on around her, while Deanne’s own thoughts traveled back years. Suddenly, she was running hard again with Nikki, their hearts racing in fear, outrunning the two boys in the alley. Faster than Nikki, she was running ahead of her, listening for Nikki’s cues to turn right or left. Barely, she cleared an unexpected ditch, scrambling over the rough mound of dirt and gravel. Then she heard her friend’s cry for help. Without thought, with adrenaline shooting through her body, she went back for her. Pulled her from the ditch, right at the feet of their pursuers. Together they had thrown dirt in their faces, and escaped to safety. Together there was always a chance. Alone, she didn’t like to think about. No, she could not leave the woman in the bushes.
